about a society's ideas and values by observing
the appearance and behavior of its people."

Issue 51

51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically
designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

The speaker asserts that only when education is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student can it be truly effective. However, it oversimplifies this issue. In my point of view, though individual needs and interests play a key role in students’ learning process, an educational system meeting everyone’s need is neither sensible nor maneuverable.

Admittedly, Taking the individual needs and interests into account is undoubtedly a dramatic progress in the educational system. Since children are always willing and enthusiastic about learning and curious about the world around them. Sometimes, they don’t do well in the some academic works just because they have no interests in that specific academic area. A student fails math exams may be a talent in music or dance; a student who fall asleep in the history class may be enthusiastic in the chemistry class. Tough all the students explore their interested aspect in different ways, all students should have an opportunity to explore and learn no matter what the level and learning style of the child are.  Therefore, an educational system that can take into account the specific needs and interests of each student will help the students to fully develop their distinct potential and talent. In such an educational system, students, feeling centered and appreciated, will be more motivated to study.

However, that kind of educational system though perfect as it stands, is just something unrealistic. If we design the teaching plan according to every student’s different needs and interests, and at the same time, considering the distinguishing teaching pattern, how tremendous the plan will be. We have a great number of students, but limited teaching resource. Moreover, since children are easily shifting their interests from one place to another, adjusting the teaching plan with respect to the shifting is also considerable. In short, an educational system that suits everyone’s need is something our society cannot afford.

Furthermore, even if educational resources abound, specifically designed education should not take the place of traditional general education. It is unwise for our educational system to provide students with only the courses that interest them and let them give up the courses which seem to be of no apparent help to their future careers or the temporary interests. The purpose of education is not only to meet the curiosities of our children, but more important, to produce a rounded person with a full understanding of himself and of his place in society, which is more influential to the later-life of a child. Too much emphasis on the interests and neglecting other crucial aspects, such as verbal communication, critical thinking and social skills, is running in the opposite direction of a better and effective educational system.

On the other hand, although compete liberty in designing education is not available to all individual students, schools can try their best to offer more choices and autonomy to students as long as the quality of compulsory education is guaranteed.

To sum up, though interests are always the best teacher in the learning process, an educational system specifically designed to meet the individual needs is far away from sensible and maneuverable. And our society while providing our children with the general education, should also pay attention to their individual needs by offering more choices.

Issue 50

50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at

the college and university level, all faculty should

be required to spend time working outside the academic

world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Whether college faculty should spend time working in course-relating professions is a question whose answer all depends. In response to this issue, we need to take both maneuverability and necessity into account. I agree with the speaker insofar as those subjects closely related with pragmatism, for working experience of teachers can benefit both teaching and learning process. However, as subjects taught in university are so different with each other, the final judgment, in my point of view, should depend on a case-by-case analysis.

To begin with, the pace of technological advancement, social changes and academic progress is so quick that knowledge contained in recently published textbooks often lags current developments. Therefore, it is really necessary for teachers major in pragmatic subjects to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, which can benefit both teachers and students. With respect to teachers, practical working experience in the non-academic world relevant to their major will not only broaden their thinking, but at the same time will enable them to impart more efficient knowledge to the subject with relevance to current trends. What’s more, working experience while helping teachers to update the knowledge in textbooks, has improved their class by providing them with more vivid and pragmatic examples. As a result, teacher in class can connect abstract theories with the real conditions they encountered in work, which conduces to the students’ understanding of knowledge, and at the same time, providing students with their precious experience.

With respect to students, working experience in relevant professions puts college faculty in a better position to help students adjust from campus to the job market. Staff experienced in both the real-life situations of subject they teach and specialized knowledge can not only impart the knowledge, but also share their working experience with students, therefore, helping students to design a suitable and practice career after graduation.

However, it is not necessary for teachers in many fundamental majors take part in the course-related work, nor does it maneuverable. On the one hand, academic areas, such as biology and material, are more advanced in laboratory than in the real-life situations, thus teachers of those majors need not participate in the non-academic work. On the other hand, in the academic areas, such as mathematics, fundamental physics, philosophy and literal art, it is impossible for teachers find a job that is both in non-academic area and major related.

Furthermore, the school should also pay attention to the time that teachers use in work. Undue work of teacher may result in inadequately prepare for class and overlook of basic knowledge which is more important for students.

To sum up, from the analysis mentioned above, I am inclined to support the speaker's allegation that to improve the quality of the higher education, it is essential to require faculty to spend time working outside campus relevant to the course they teach. However, I must claim that some basic disciplines needn't require faculty to do so and redundant outside work would draw educators' attention at universities.

48"The study of history places too much emphasis
on individuals. The most significant events and
trends in history were made possible not by the
famous few, but by groups of people whose
 identities have long been forgotten."

The speaker asserts that it is the groups of people, though always ignored, rather than some individuals that render the most significant events. While, the contributions of groups of people who sacrifice and devoted themselves to the careers of the progress of humanity cannot be denied, personally I am more inclined to the standpoint that history should throw more highlights on the individuals.

Admittedly, the world cannot see so many respectable, impressive and influential events without the dedication of that groups of people who are loyal to their believes as well as the great men whose names are later mentioned in the book of history. Achievement of freedom in India would have been impossible without the sacrifices of the martyrs who adhered to Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of Satyagraha and non-violence; The raising state of black people in America will not be the fact without the self efforts to pursuit a better lives and adherence to the dream of the advocators of Martin Luther king; The success of famous scientists or inventors is built on the failures of others, by avoiding thousands of impasses that had been demonstrated by those lost in the history. To some extent, it is the groups of people that ensure the mentions of the names of those grand men on the milestone of history.

However, the grandness of those key individual lays not only in the great ideas and conceptions they brought about, but also the power of character, rallying the people together for a common purpose, which do drive the society forwards, and at the same time, inspiring the people both within and after their era. Watt’s invention brought us the industry revolution, while improving the efficiency of production in an astonishing way, had ignited men’s desire for a better lives; Edison’s light, while illuminating the world, had lighted up the hope of thousands of people, for his 1800 ways not to make a light tells us that failure is nothing other than the path of success; Napoleon’s triumph showed to the later generations that if there is a will there is a way; Mother Teresa warmed the whole world, telling people that love is always around. Therefore, by immortalizing these few individuals, the history stored those crucial and historical events, the powerful personality and the distinguishing leadership as well, which is more meaningful to the successors, because it not only provides the later with the facts of events, but also inspires them to pursuit their own dreams.

Furthermore, history as a field of research which specializes in examining and analyzing the sequence of events and investigating the cause and effect relationship between them, should pay more attention to the individual. Individuals are like the topic sentences of their era’s paragraphs in the book of history, and they provide the possibility for the historians to have an overview of the periods of history and connect the events one by one to piece together the history as a whole.

To sum up, though the contribution of groups of people should not be ignored for their sacrifice and dedications that move the society forwards, the history as a research field chiefly concerning the cause and effect relationship should pay more attention to the individual, not only for their key roles in pushing the development of the society, but also for their powerful characters and leaderships.

130"How children are socialized today determines the

destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned

how to raise children who can help bring about a better

society."

The speaker asserts that the destiny of our society relies on the degree of children’s socialization, but for the time being, we have not yet found a way to bring our children up to better our society. From my point of view, this assertion, while emphasizing the crucial aspect of socialization, has ignored alternative factors that contribute to a capable citizen as well as the progress in the history of mankind which demonstrate our society’s ability to cultivate young people who can impulse the development of the entire society.

I concede that socialization is really important not only for the individual but also for the society as a whole, especially in today’s world that admires cooperation and mutual communication. As for the individual, especially the children, the profound influence of socialization lays in that it helps to set up a rounded character, which will benefit them lifelong. It helps them to comprehend their own culture, get along with the culture, and most important, adopt themselves well to the society, as a result, ensuring a better live. In other words, it helps people to understand others as well as to be understood. As for the entire society, socialization enhances the centripetal force. It helps to build a more stable and harmonious society.

However, socialization is not the only factor that determines a person’s success and future, nor can it decide our society’s destiny. Looking back in the history, we may find that the successes of those greatest scientists, artists, even some politicians who have contributed influentially to a better society result from many other factors rather than socialization. Vincent Van Gogh who left us with plenty of masterpieces, such as The Potato Easters and Sunflowers, lived a solitary live. Obviously, it is not his socialization that directed him the way to the realm of art, but the inspiring of the love for art pave him the path. John Nash, one of the greatest economists of today, who brought us with the game theory not because of his socialization, on the contrary, out of the pursuit of science and truth. Sir Churchill, an outstanding politician as well as the Nobel Prize winner, who had difficult in adapting himself well to the life in school during his childhood, led the nation in crisis and defeated the Fascist in the Second World War. Rather than socialization, honesty, persistence, and probity are the key of his success.

Furthermore, both the tremendous progress of democracy and technology, especially in recent half century, can provide supports to the belief that we are having a better society than ever before, which brought about by our predecessors who are undoubtedly raised by their predecessors. Therefore, we see the improvement of gender equality which is reflected by the upward spirals of the state in family and career; the diminishment of racial discrimination that is revealed by being offered same opportunity to get educated and employed; the globalization that promote mutual communication and understanding between people of different cultures and religions; the breakthrough in medical treatment that saved thousands of lives; and of course the progress in political that makes more voices heard… All of these are the creation of the children of most recent century, and in front of the fact of these, how can we say that we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.

As mention above, the socialization of children is not the decisive factors for whether they can make later-life contributions to the entire society, while other factors may play a more important role. Moreover, since our society are striding forwards on the way to be a more tolerance and humanity one, we should be confident and proud to believe in the future of our society, in other words, our society always have the ability to raise up a new generation that are capable of making the world a better place for the entire human race.
